How Much Money Do I Need for an Interrailing Trip
How much money do I need for interrailing?
A very common question we get for those going on their first interrail trip is, ‘how much money do I need?’. From keeping it safe to how to budget your money while away, here are our responses to your FAQs!
Let’s talk about money and budgeting:
How much money is needed is going to vary from person to person. Factors coming into play are how well do you want to sleep and eat, what do you want to do in each city and how many days you are planning on travelling. If you’re reading this, I assume it’s because you’re on a tight budget and want to keep it that way!
When we get asked the money question, we always feel a little reluctant to answer, as we don’t want you to stick to this limit and spend no more. You are setting off to enjoy your time away. Money spent on travelling will give you more than what possessions can, such as memories, once in a lifetime experiences and friends from all over the world.
We would advise allowing for around 50-100 euros per day, do you have to spend this exact amount every day? No. Different factors will come into play, for example, one of the days you may want to do a tour that costs around 15-20 euros, but you still need to allow money for eating, public transport etc.
Your budget will depend on how you’re planning to treat yourself. Are you staying in hostels and cooking your own food in the communal kitchen, or are you staying at a hotel and ordering room service every night?
REMEMBER: COST PER DAY WILL VARY FROM COUNTRY TO COUNTRY, EASTERN EUROPE IS GENERALLY CHEAPER THAN WESTERN EUROPE.
Currencies:
Not all European countries use Euros, so be mindful of this. Don’t be taking a wad of euros with you, as you will find yourself stuck if you reach, for example, Prague who use Czech Koruna. If I was you, I would use a travel card, such as Revolut or FairFx. You can exchange your money into whatever currency you need for a country and it’s free to use while away! You can withdraw money from ATMs using these cards but check what the fees are regarding this. They are easy to top up while you’re away and can even help track your spending. This means you won’t be wasting cash that can’t be used elsewhere before moving onto the next city.
*BE AWARE IF YOU CARRY CASH*:
If you’re planning on budgeting with your cash and not using a travel card or debit card while you’re away, please be smart! Have safe storage for your money, European cities are crawling with pick pocketers, and if you’re staying in hostels, make sure to lock your money away in a safe place! Hide cash in socks or your toiletries bag, because if something does happen, you will have backup!
Final note:
Don’t limit yourself, as you will limit the experiences you will have. Enjoy yourself and spend your money wisely!
